Traditional dramatic works have generally been divided into two categories; Comedy and Tragedy. A tragedy, by definition, is a story that begins well and resolves badly. In contrast, a comedy typically begins poorly and resolves well. A traditional comedy always culminates with a wedding and a feast.
The storyline contained in the Bible is the consummate comedy, possibly being the source of inspiration for all human-authored comedies to follow it.
While the Bible begins with the creation of a perfect world, it almost immediately degenerates into a dark and evil world once the human race falls into sin. Sin introduces a separation between man and his God, and introduces the need for a reconciliation. The Old Testament is Godâs story of reconciling man to Himself. The crowning achievement of this reconciliation, or climax of the story, occurs at the beginning of the New Testament as Jesus Christ removes sin from those who accept His sacrifice. This is best illustrated in this passage in 2 Corinthians 5:17;
Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (KJV)
The Bible, in keeping with the comparison to a comedy, also culminates in a wedding. Christ is the Bridegroom and His church the Bride. Even the wedding feast is spoken of in passages like Luke 13:29;
People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. (KJV)
This may seem like a very trivial thing, indeed. But I have found that keeping this in mind has been a huge help to me in putting the Old Testament in perspective, while helping me to see the joy and victory contained in the New Testament. We can get so caught up in this world that we fail to remember that the victory has already been won! The darkness has already been overcome, the evil has already been conquered. Now we just await the glorious return of the Victor and the happily-ever-after ending that awaits us.
